At the November 8, 2010 regular Eastport City Council meeting the Council voted to go to a Single Assessor in place of a Board of Assessors. The reason behind this is that the Board format requires three staff members. Due to staff cuts and State law there is not enough staff to legally cover this requirement.
As assessor, I am State certified to work in cities and towns of 2,000 inhabitants. This negates the need for a Board. I maintain my certification through annual courses, usually in August, held by the Maine Revenue Services, Property Tax Division. The Property Tax Division provides three basic courses in property tax administration for local assessors, which are offered periodically at various locations throughout the State.
You will normally not see any difference to the way things ran with the Board. I am still bound by and assess property by State law. This approach is simply a stream-lined method of assessing.
