Excise Tax
Excise tax is paid to the municipality in which the individual or business registering the vehicle resides. The amount of tax that must be paid is determined by applying a mil rate to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the vehicle when it was new. The mil rate decreases annually until the vehicle is in its sixth model year, at which time the excise tax plateaus.

There are several ways to find the MSRP:
  • If you have purchased the vehicle through a dealer, the MSRP will be on the window sticker;
  • If you are renewing an existing registration, the MSRP is called the "Base Price" on your current registration form (upper right-hand corner of the registration document);
  • You may be able to find an MSRP estimate online by searching "MSRP for YEAR, MAKE, MODEL", i.e. "MSRP for 2019 Toyota Corolla" Please note that this method may produce a different value than the one used by your municipality.
